Active Release Techniques PDF Print E-mail

Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a patented, non-invasive, soft-tissue treatment that locates and breaks down scar tissue and adhesions which cause pain, swelling, and reduced movement. Founded by Dr. Michael Leahy, ART is built upon a strong scientific foundation, as well as, years of practical application in the clinical treatment of soft-tissue injuries. Dr. Leahy states, “It works by changing the basic structure of soft tissues and establishing proper motion and tension between soft tissues.”

ART providers use their hands to evaluate the tightness, texture, and movement of muscle, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves in order to determine abnormalities. These abnormalities are then treated using a combination of precise tension and specific patient movements. There are over 500 treatment protocols that are unique to ART.

ART is proven to effectively treat and resolve many common repetitive strain injuries (RSI), without the use of surgery. Repetitive strain injuries are the direct result of repeated movements, which over time cause ongoing damage to the muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments, and fascia. The following is a list of common repetitive strain injuries that benefit from Active Release Techniquesâ. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, TMJ, Shin Splints, Achilles Tendinitis, Frozen Shoulder, Iliotibial Band Syndrome, Back Pain, Neck Pain, Headaches.... and the list goes on.

ART is also being utilized at the highest levels of athletic competition, including the Olympics, National Football League, Arena Football League, Ultimate Fighting Championship and Ironman triathlons. As a result of the success of ART, several NFL teams have even placed ART providers on staff.

Whether you’re an office worker, athlete, or simply someone who is proactive about their health, ART can help you to perform at your best.
